Breaking Patterns

I've often heard and read the phrase breaking patterns in the spiritual community, and I used to use it a lot myself. However, like any other phrase that gets repeated over and over in many contexts and with different aims, it feels to me that it has lost its meaning.

There are patterns everywhere in our reality. We see patterns as something that repeats over and over. Everything that is not purely random has a pattern. Take, for example, the pattern on a sand dollar, on a sunflower, on snowflakes, on honeycombs, on waves, clouds…

We make sense of a world rained by chaos by identifying the order. We are designed to find these structures pleasing and reassuring. Plato, the Greek philosopher of the 4th century BCE, reduced the visible Universe from disorder to order, imagining a Universe created using geometric principles.

The patterns we can see and recognize in Nature also exist within us. The network of veins in your body echoes the great river networks and the veins on the leaves of plants, Treetops, and our lungs, among many others.

Our brains also create patterns as part of their nature and evolutionary traits. From what I have researched and understood, our brain creates these patterns to save energy and be more efficient. Imagine these patterns in your brain as systems of how you operate in the world.

We create these patterns when we are young based on what our surroundings inform us are the correct ways to do things or the “usual” ways in which we experience the world. The actions that we take, or we see the people around us take, create pathways in our neurons.

The way other people do things is not your unique way of doing things because we are all different. So, the patterns that you created at a young age might not be beneficial for your growth or reaching your goals. The journeys that we are here to follow are unique. No two people share the same view of the world, which is part of what makes our experience here on Earth so special.

We carry these learned patterns as methods of safety and comfort. But as we noticed before, our reality is mostly based on chaos, where everything is constantly changing. When we stick to the learned patterns, we are acting on autopilot to save energy. We send much of the information we are experiencing in the present moment to the subconscious mind, which prevents us from learning from our environment and adapting accordingly.

This causes our lives to change little as we repeat situations and scenarios we have experienced before, getting stuck in unending cycles. Our ego hides the truth of these unhelpful patterns in a sense of false safety.

How do you break free from the patterns?

First, you must become aware of the pattern you are experiencing in the present moment. Where you are now is related to your level of awareness, and you won't experience change without noticing and understanding why or how you got to where you are. Many times, at least for me, it involves unhealed Trauma, which causes me to react without thinking, aligning with my negative patterns. Take an honest look at yourself, your situation, and the patterns that are appearing, and notice what about those patterns are not working for you any longer.

Stop unhelpful patterns of negative thoughts and judgment towards where you are. To do this, you have to accept yourself fully. Just as the river can carve new ways through the stone to get to the ocean, you also need to carve a new network of neurons in your brain. Ones that are more beneficial and would help you in the long run.

Be present. For someone who is always in her head, I know it is difficult to always be present in what is happening around you, but believe me, it gets easier the more you do it. Perseverance is the name of the game. The more you are present in your life, the more you will be able to identify patterns, learn from them, and change them accordingly.

As Neville Goddard accurately states in his book, the secret is in feeling. Carving a new path is easier if you add feelings to it. Try imagining what this new pattern would bring into your life, and smile, feel joy, gratitude, peace, safety, or whatever it is that you want to feel in your new pattern.

The more aware you are of your patterns, the more you can change them. Don't give up until you have the life you most desire.
